can they really arrest you without telling you why they’re arresting you if you ask them to tell you?

They probably told him all they know. Warrants are not necessarily for crimes, but any time you’ve ignored any part of the legal system summoning you, they can put a warrant out to police for you to be arrested and detained. It’s pretty scary honestly. Chances are this guy went about changing his name wrong and ignored the courts requests to fix it. I respect him for fighting it though, this is no way to treat a person.
